Jodie and I created the Zachary Cruz Memorial Scholarship at UC Berkeley in 2010. Since then, this endowed scholarship has generated over $30,000 in awards for hard working students at Cal. We set up the endowment to generate scholarships in Zachary's name in perpetuity--FOREVER! Over the past three years, working on behalf of the ZMCFoundation, I have had the pleasure of personally reading applications and interviewing finalists for the scholarship. This fall, we will once again distribute $10,000 in awards to student-parents and transfer students at Berkeley.
In addition to upholding my alma mater's mission of access, equity, and inclusion by financially supporting non-traditional students, the Zachary Cruz Memorial Scholarship has helped Zachary's memory live anew every year at UC Berkeley, a place where he grew from infant, to toddler, to little boy; a place he held close to his heart and that is inseparable from my memories of of life with my son.
